My Story

I am running the Melbourne half marathon this year and have decided help support a colleague with his cause 12 for 12. He and 11 others are running 12 half marathons this year to raise awareness about mental health dedicated to his late sister. Check out the website if you would like more information: http://www.12fortwelve.com

If you would like to support the cause, donations will go to beyondblue. Thanks for your support!

Join us in changing the conversation around mental health, one step at a time!

Our organisation, 12 for Twelve, was set up by Rhett Nicholas in November 2017, in memory of his late sister, Brittany, who had recently lost her battle with depression and bi-polar disorder.

As a way of grieving for their loss, Rhett and his friends have sought to take an active approach towards changing the conversation around mental health. They have chosen to do so because, whilst there is an improved level of awareness about the commonality of mental health issues suffered by people like Brittany, the community is still hesitant about openly discussing them. In fact, in recent months, we have found that by discussing our intention to set up this organisation in various social circles, we have become even more aware of the importance of conversing about the impact of mental health with friends, colleagues and families.

It’s 2018, and time for us to change the conversation. That being so, we are aiming to run 12 half-marathons in 12 months as a way of raising $100,000 which we will then donate to Beyondblue. We are taking on this challenge as a way of promoting the benefits that physical exercise and an active lifestyle can have on mental wellbeing. In doing so, we also aim to compliment the work done by an established charity such as Beyondblue via a “bottom-up” approach.
Given our emphasis on running, and our intention to facilitate a gradual shift in the social perception of mental health issues, our motto for raising the target amount is “one step at a time”.
